"The art of constructing authentic half hull architectural models appears to be nearly lost, and it is my great pleasure to make them available to boat lovers around the world."
He attended schools in Lakewood NY, and college at the State University of NY Cobleskill and Le Tourneau University in Longview, TX. He then joined the Marine Corps after college.The love for the sea and it's Heritage was undeniable and resulted in an avocation of small boat design and construction. In addition a great deal of time has been spent on commercial vessels and racing sailboats in many of the major races in the U.S.
He received his Oceans Masters license in 1971 and had been heavily involved in matters concerning the sea for the major portion of his life. Activities that have been a part of his background consist of the following: Consultant to Maritime Organizations, Marine Management consultant, Maritime Safety, Yacht Design and International Commercial Maritime Activities. In an effort to promote his love of the sea, was a founder of both International Vessel Recovery and Maritime Arts and Research. Capt. J Peter Jones was his own man and everyone who knew him has a colorful story or two to relate.
Mr. Jones and his family followed their life time dream of buying a 42 foot sailing ketch in Ellos, Sweden and sailing throughout Europe. Their adventure encompassed more than 10 countries from Sweden to Italy, lasted almost 3 years and resulted in a series on Armed Forces Network titled "Adventures of the Peter Christian", and several published articles. Captain J Peter Jones, as he was known to his friends, never lost his love of sailing and was able to combine his artistic talents working with wood and specializing in nautical art into a new career.
"I am inspired by the vessels I create. I want to bring out the natural beauty of the wood and the best overall design in the Half Hull vessels I carve. This art form is a part of history and in today's hi-tech society, closeness with our Maritime Heritage is most important. I want to share this closeness through my skill with chisels, blades and sanders."
"My Half Hulls are originals. They are all signed, dated and numbered. I am inspired by the vessels I carve and want to recreate the beauty and inspiration for others through my carving. Combining the lines, shapes and the natural beauty of wood is a positive expression. I have developed the ability to "see" and want to build an emotional connection to our heritage. If my art touches someone to their very soul, I feel a deep satisfaction."
The work of Captain. J. Peter Jones is exhibited in private and corporate collections including offices of members of the
Maritime Law Association of the United States.
